Cinder X (Death Collectors #2) by Jessica Sorensen

Cinder X - Jessica Sorensen

I am a big fan of the first book in this series, sadly this one didn't live up to the standard of the first. The writing was sloppier in this, silly errors and the flow was stunted.

There wasn't a plot to this one, it was a filler chapter. It could have been scaled down and added to the end of the first, or to the beginning of the next book. There was no new information that required a whole book.

I kept waiting for Asher to show up, and when he did the plot twist between him and Cameron could be seen from Mars.

Hopefully the next book in the series will be more fulfilling.

The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

The Darkest Minds - Alexandra Bracken

It feels like I'm in a minority, but I didn't like this as much as I thought I would.

Reading a book through someones eyes can be an emotional experience, but I really didn't connect with Ruby at all. The only character that invoked any feeling in me was Liam. He had some of the best lines in the book, he's intelligent and kind, and hella smooth.

The book was fast paced, and to me not clear enough in the jumps between hours and days. It was somewhat confusing at times even.

There were many things I saw coming a mile away which took from the reading experience a bit. Would have been nice to be surprised.

The ending didn't give me much fulfillment at all.

Breaking Point (Turning Point #2) by N.R. Walker

Breaking Point (Turning Point) - N.R. Walker

As much as I love Matt and Kira, and the people surrounding them, this plot and the writing didn't quite live up to the former book.
The case Matt was working on felt rushed and had a bit of; I needed something to make him feel what I want him to feel, this is as good as any.

This takes place in LA, the characters are American, so why are they speaking British English?
Why is is full of British words? And British spelling?
I get it the author is Australian... well then make sure you have American editors and pre readers... if not you might as well just make the book take place somewhere else.

I still love Matt and Kira... and I am looking forward to hopefully seeing more of them.

Alpha Trio: Vol 1 - Cats & Dogs by Ana Vela

Alpha Trio: Vol. 1 - Cats & Dogs - Ana Vela

*Slightly spoilery review*

Got this in a giveaway here on BookLikes.

I was very intrigued by the blurb, but it's misleading. What you expect when reading that is most definitely not what you get.

I was expecting action and intriguing lore, what I got was a conversation about the leaders can too be female, and no it's not like Underworld. And then sex. What little information we did get I could almost recognize, just small bits borrowed from here and there, books and movies alike.

It's a short story, that ended abruptly, and from what I gather will lead straight into the next book. What I read here was a prologue and a first chapter. So what I'm wondering is why not just take the tree volumes and make a proper book? Put more information in there, more emotion, just something that has the reader getting attached to these characters.

From what I understood this was Em finding his mate, his one true love. That can explain insta-love, and sex within two hours of meeting each other. We've seen it before. What we didn't get to see was any of those emotions on the page, we got, 'oh my she makes me horny. Awesome I can smell her arousal too.'

It just needed more, more emotion, more information... more getting to know each other.

**It's at the moment free on amazon.**

Crossing the Line (Battered Hearts #3) by Kele Moon

Crossing the Line (Battered Hearts #3) - Kele Moon

Wyatt did redeem himself to me. But for a smart guy, he's unbelievable stupid.

This is the most emotional book of the series, also the one that might have made me angriest. What Moon put Tabitha though in this made me cry my eyes out one minute and rage the next.

Some of the plot was just a little over the top in this too, some things could just have been scaled down a bit.

I did like that Moon took us back in their history, reading their story from the very first words to each other as kids gave it more of and emotional attachment for me.

It was really nice to get to see Jules and Clay's story from the very beginning too.

Star-Crossed (Battered Hearts #2) by Kele Moon

Star Crossed - Kele Moon

I didn't like this as much as the first. There was just some plot that didn't sit well with me, it was just so far removed from the first book and over the top.

Both Jules (Juliet) and Romeo, yes that is their names, are great characters. Romeo has some big demons, but like in the former book he's a normal guy that's just good at fighting.

Wyatt really pissed me off in this one, what he did (and got the doctor to do) is so unethical and illegal it had me gritting my teeth. I truly hope he'll redeem himself to me in the next book, his book.

Defying the Odds (Battered Hearts #1) by Kele Moon

Defying the Odds - Kele Moon

These books are a bit in style... MMA fighters are all over the place. Most of these books are really bad, they're full of controlling assholes with rage issues. This one, is not. And it was a nice change.

Clay is a mellow dude that just happens to be good at fighting, in the ring.
Melody has been through hell, but she is not weak and in need of saving.

The Backup Boyfriend by River Jaymes

The Backup Boyfriend - River Jaymes

Near perfect book. Two thumbs up.

Love Alec, love Dylan even more. Love that Dylan just is what he is, and accepts it so easily despite it being a big change in his life.

Lovable side characters, even the ex-boyfriend... I hope we'll get some clarity to why things played out as they did in the next book.

It was funny and sad and just enough drama to make it great.

I will most definitely read more from this author.

ARC - NetGalley question

Is it ok for me to not finish an ARC?

There's two books I am really struggling with and can just not get through, and another that I feel is just not at all what I was expecting and way too violent.

If I write up a short statement why I'm not finishing it, is it ok to leave it DNF?

ARC Review: Through the Black Veil (Last of the Shardyn #2) by Steve Vera

Through the Black Veil (Last of the Shardyn) - Steve Vera

This was a very long book, that I feel could have used some shortening down. There were a few scenes that could have been re worked, and some that could have been removed completely. It was at times tedious to read.

There was also some depth missing to it, the emotion we got in the first wasn't there in the second. There is a great love story going on between Gavin and Amanda, but it's not used at all. We get more scenes between Amanda and Donovan, than we do the couple in love. (I would have loved some Gavin stepping up and putting down some rules there actually.)

The building of the relationships between Skip and Cirena and Skip and Noah were missing too. Lots of potential lost there.

The jumping between point of views in this didn't work as well as in the first. Following Donovan was not fun at all and I found myself skimming his parts.

The jumps in the middle of the battles (Gavin at the gate and Donovan at the Olympics) were especially disorienting, just as we find momentum with Gavin and start seeing the battle happen on the page, we jump to Donovan.

You cannot argue that Vera is a talented writer, the world of Theia is beautiful and he paints it vividly. The battle scenes are clear on the page and easy to follow.

Despite the lack of emotional depth, I still really like all the characters. Well maybe not Donovan. But that is Vera's intention (I think), so mission accomplished.

Drynn (Last of the Shardyn #1) by Steve Vera

Drynn - Steve Vera

I stumbled upon book 2 in this series on NetGalley, but the story sounded so good in the blurb I felt I had to read the first one too.

There is absolutely no regrets making that decision.

There are a lot characters to follow in this, but the writing is seamless so the cluttered feeling you can get with many point of views isn't there. It's easy to recognize in whose mind you're in. There is no confusion in either that or plot.

The plot is thought out and the reader is well informed.

The characters, as many as there are, are well developed and all have their parts.

I like that the mythology is woven into parts of our actual history, to the point you can't actually say 'No that's not true.' It might actually be.

There is magic and supernatural creatures, there are Knights of a different world, there's love and lots of action. There are real people caught in an extreme situation. It's a little bit of everything.

I can maybe even forgive the Amanda Kasey/Amanda Casey and Lucien/Lucian.

I have a dream

that someday booklikes will let us see how we rated and shelved books on the dashboard.

Catch my Breath by M.J. O'Shea (DNF)

Catch My Breath - M.J. O'Shea

I know nothing of One Direction, except the things I have learnt on tumblr. But I have been informed that this is fiction with play by play borrowed scenes from Louis life.

Either you write fanfiction and make no profit, or you come up with your own stuff. This is someone's real life no matter if you change a few small things. It just doesn't sit right with me.

I did try to give it a chance, but I could not get into it. It was just not a good book from where I am sitting.

Plagiarist Alert: Elizabeth Nelson

Trinity - Elizabeth Nelson

Plagiarist Alert!

Her blurb is actually author, Roni Loren's bio.

This thief has plagiarized Kristi Avalon's, Billionaire Bodyguard. (http://www.amazon.com/Billionaire-Bodyguard-Book-Bodyguards-ebook/dp/B00ALJDTIU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1386185918&sr=8-1&keywords=Billionaire+Bodyguard)

The author's photo is stolen also http://www.businessinsider.com/author-elizabeth-nelsons-fake-photo-2013-12

I wouldn't be surprise if this thief's other books are also plagiarized. Spread the word if you can.

TwistedLea adding: I spoke to Kristi Avalon on amazon, and she informed me that there are also major scenes taken directly word for word from her book.

ARC Review: A Basic Renovation by Sandra Antonelli

A Basic Renovation - Sandra Antonelli

For most of the book I just wanted it to be over. It was slow moving and at points sloppy writing. Spelling errors that someone should have caught very easily.

Both Lesley and Dominic are childish and sometimes just plain dumb. There's a lot of talk about how they're middle aged and yet the smartest person is the 16 year old.

As for the rest of the side characters they're just selfish and doesn't listen.

I think it's all supposed to be cute and funny, but I just find it annoying.

The small parts of following Lesley's grandfather GP were very unnecessary, and had me skimming those parts.

As for the sex scenes, those were skipped entirely, overused cliches and shuddering word choices.

There's not much else to say about it, feel free to read and form your own opinion.

ARC review: Charming by Elliott James

Charming - Elliott James

This is at times a funny read, and a times very touching, all mixed with a very interesting mythology.

It's a little bit of Buffy, with a little piece of Supernatural. And thrown in there too is some actual history.

The writing overall is good, but some paragraphs and sentences could use a major overhaul. It is written in first person narrative which can be iffy, but I found no faults in it reading this.

You could also see that it's written by a man a mile away. Especially looking at one scene, where the hero of the story is talking to the love interests boyfriend. No self respecting woman would ever write a scene like that in their books. You are not the boss of her, men.

Despite that, John is very likable. Sig captures you too, and even the side characters finds their own spot in your heart.

The ending leaves you open to a sequel, and I would personally read it.
